Compulsive Hoarding | Progress Report

Neurocognitive correlates of hoarding

A recent study, led by Dr. Scott Mackin in collaboration with our group, examined the neurocognitive correlates of hoarding behaviors among older adults with late life depression.  This study, which is in press in the International Journal of Geriatric Psychiatry,  found that individuals with severe hoarding behaviors had poorer performance on measures of categorization, problem solving ability, information processing speed, and verbal memory when compared to individuals without severe hoarding behaviors.  The rate of severe compulsive hoarding in this sample of older adults with depression was 13%, almost three times the overall population prevalence.
